Crashes > of the R.A.F.
During the approach to Essen the Whitley V, Z9212 was hit by flaklights of the Flakscheinw. Reg. 1. The searchlights tracked the aircraft for almost three minutes before it was attacked and fired upon by Lt. Fritz Carstens' Bf 110 of the 7th/Nachtjagdgeschwader (NJG).
Both engines of the Withley caught fire and the aircraft crashed at Wildenrath, north-east of Wassenberg. Sgt Arthur Lord and Fl/O. Trevor Taylor were able to save themselves by parachute and became German prisoners of war. The three other crew members could only be recovered dead from the wreckage and were buried in Cologne's South Cemetery.
