On approach to bomb Cologne, the Wellington Ic, Z8909 was caught by the searchlights of the 3./Res. Flakscheinwerfer. Abt. 270 captured and tracked it.
The well-lit target was taken under fire by 1st /Res.Flak.Abt. 514, the badly hit Wellington crashed in the Kalscheuren railway station area and exploded on impact.
None of the six-man crew survived the crash. They were all buried in Cologne's South Cemetery.
