During the attack on Cologne, the Wellington Z8897 was caught by the searchlights of the 2nd/Res. Flak Light Dept. 408 from Cologne-Dellbrück, and was taken under fire by the flak. Badly hit, the aircraft crashes between Glessen and Fliesteden, none of the crew surviving. All are buried in Cologne's South Cemetery.
