Z1216

Crashes > of the R.A.F.

During the attack on Düsseldorf, the Z1216 with an all-Australian crew came within the range of several anti-aircraft batteries, was hit and crashed in Hürth near Cologne.

An exact localisation of the crash site has not yet been possible, the anti-aircraft gunnery report describes the crash site as "near Hürth", the extended listing states "Hürth-Knapsack". Aviation Safety names "Hürth Stadium" as the crash site, but this is considered unlikely as Z1477 had crashed there the day before.

As the dead from several crashes around Cologne on 10 and 11 September 1942 were taken to the reserve hospital in Cologne-Nippes, the actual locations of the bodies were not correctly recorded there. For this reason, it is not possible to determine the exact place where the bodies were found and consequently where they crashed.

What is certain is that the dead crew of the Z1216 were buried in Cologne's Südfriedhof cemetery.
