Crashes > of the R.A.F.

During the approach to the 1000-bomber raid on Cologne, Wellington IV, Z1208, came under anti-aircraft fire. The aircraft was hit and crashed burning into a garden area on Stephanstrasse in Neuss at around 02:00. The point of impact was near the railway line, about fifty metres from the nearest house. There was no major material damage, especially as the bombs they were carrying fortunately did not explode.
The aircraft burnt out completely and the five crew members were recovered from the wreckage the next day, completely burnt to death. As none of the bodies could be identified, they were all buried as ‘unknown soldiers’ in the cemetery in Neuss. It was not until June 1947 that they were exhumed and laid to rest at Rheinberg British Cemetery. Only three crew members, Sgt. Lowden, Sgt. Wallon and Sgt. Thornton could be identified beyond doubt.
