Z1205

Crashes > of the R.A.F.

The Wellington IV, Z1205 was hit by anti-aircraft fire over Cologne and crashed outside the city limits in Horrem, near Frechen, in an open field.
The crew could only be recovered dead and were buried in the South Cemetery in Cologne.

Remark:

The fact that all death certificates from the reserve military hospital in Cologne-Nippes state "Horrem" as the place where the bodies were found speaks in favour of the crash site near Horrem.
The police report for 6/7 April 1942 mentions that "an enemy aircraft was damaged by anti-aircraft fire over Cologne and crashed in open terrain outside the police district". This comment suggests that the crash took place immediately behind the city limits.

The record of the Cologne Air Raid Precinct/Cologne Police dated 7 April 1942 * shows that "an aircraft was shot down in a Deckstein-Stotzheim line in the direction of Knapsack".
This means that the information about the approximate location of the crash coincides fairly precisely, so the crash site is assumed to be "near Horrem".
