On approach to Essen, the Wellington III, X3799 came under heavy flak and crashed near the Hochkreuz, close to the "Gut Maarhausen". Three crew members were killed, two were able to save themselves by parachute and became German prisoners of war.
The exact location of the crash has not yet been determined despite extensive research. The approximate crash site is marked on the map below.
