The Wellington III, X3639 was fired upon by flak during the attack on Cologne and crashed on fire in Cologne-Niehl, near Neusser Landstrasse in an open field. Four crew members were killed and buried in Cologne's South Cemetery.
Only Sgt. Josef Jerram survived the crash, probably by parachute jump, and became a German prisoner of war.
