Crashes > of the R.A.F.

The Wellington III, X3358 was fired upon by several flak units and hit hard. Except for Pilot Officer Henry Alfred Schumm, the rest of the crew parachuted out of the aircraft. Coming from a north-easterly direction, it looped around the IG FARBEN-WERK and came down in a glide about 100 metres east of the Philipps brothers' farm in Hackenbroich, on Strabergerweg. On impact, the plane exploded and burst into flames.

P/O Schumm burned to death in the aircraft and was later recovered from the wreckage and buried at the Südfriedhof in Cologne. A parachuted crew member was picked up in the immediate vicinity of the crash site, another was taken into custody at the Leuffchen chicken farm in Worringen by soldiers from the flak position. A third crew member landed near the cemetery in Dormagen and was arrested by police. All five parachuted crew members ended up as German prisoners of war.
