Crashes > of the R.A.F.

During the approach to the bombing target Essen, the Halifax II came into the range of several anti-aircraft units, was hit and caught fire. Four crew members were able to leave the aircraft by parachute and landed safely on the ground. They were captured and spent the rest of the war as German prisoners of war.

The aircraft crashed between Liblar and Hürth-Knapsack; the exact location of the crash cannot be determined. Three crew members, including the pilot Patrick Rochford, died in the crash and were buried in Cologne's Südfriedhof cemetery.
