While approaching the target Duisburg, the Wellington W5488 was caught by anti-aircraft searchlights and took fire from the flak. It crashed in Glüder near Solingen.
Four crew members died, were recovered and buried in Cologne's South Cemetery, two more became German prisoners of war.
