N2782
Crashes > of the R.A.F.
During the attack on Essen, the N2782 came within the range of several anti-aircraft batteries, was hit and crashed between Hürth-Berrenrath and Hürth-Knapsack in the overburden area of the open-cast lignite mine.
The entire crew died in the crash and were buried in Cologne's Südfriedhof cemetery.
During the war, all records of the crash, which were kept in Hürth town hall, were destroyed. It is therefore no longer possible to pinpoint the exact location of the crash.
The anti-aircraft gunner's diary records describe the crash site as "Berrenrath, overburden area". A short report from the police authority in Cologne notes for this day: "enemy aircraft crashed west of Berrenrath railway station" *
