Crashes > of the R.A.F.

On this Thursday, 442 bombers flew to attack Aachen, including the Halifax III, LV784 and the Halifax III, MZ675. Both aircraft came under heavy anti-aircraft fire and collided over Weisweiler. The Halifax MZ675 under its pilot Fl/Sgt Dennis Marriott caught fire and crashed in a spiral from about 500 metres at Johannisstraße in Weisweiler. Only the rear gunner, Sgt Smart, survived the crash and was captured by a soldier from a nearby anti-aircraft battery.

Six other crew members were killed in the crash, three of whom were recovered completely burnt from the front part of the aircraft wreckage. A further three bodies, some of them badly mutilated, were recovered from the area around the crash site. The six bodies were buried together with the dead from the other aircraft (LV784) in a common grave at the cemetery in Weisweiler.
