LW177

Crashes > of the R.A.F.

On the return flight from a bombing raid on Bochum, the Halifax LW177 came within the range of a German anti-aircraft battery and was hit.
The aircraft caught fire and the pilot attempted an emergency landing. However, it exploded on impact with the ground and burned out completely.
All seven crew members died and were buried in the cemetery in Vettweiß. It was not until April 1947 that the bodies were exhumed and transferred to Rheinberg British Cemetery.
