Crashes > of the R.A.F.

The Wellington X, LN284 got into a dogfight with Hptm. Hans Baer of the 4th/NJG 3 on the night of 4th July 1943 on the way to its destination Cologne. The aircraft was hit and crashed near Jackerath, four crew members were killed and buried in the cemetery in Mönchen-Gladbach. It was not possible to determine the exact circumstances of the crash or the exact location of the crash.

Only the navigator, Fl/Lt. Robert Cecil Sutherland of the R.C.A.F was able to save himself by parachute and was taken prisoner of war by the Germans unharmed. He died on 16 February 2015 at the age of 95.
