JB834
Crashes > of the R.A.F.
During the approach to Wuppertal, the Halifax II, JB834 was attacked by anti-aircraft guns and simultaneously attacked by night fighters.
At around 01:07, the aircraft crashed in an open field between Welldof and Titz and exploded. Captain Heinrich Wohlers Stab IV./ Nachtjagdgeschwader 4 (IV/NJG 4) was credited with the downing. It was his 14th aerial victory
However, it is also possible that the Halifax caught fire and exploded in the air and the debris fell in a wide field between the two towns of Titz and Welldorf. This theory is also supported by the fact that of the seven-man crew, only Sgt Warwick was found, identified and buried in Cologne's South Cemetery. The rest of the crew are still missing today and were declared dead.
Research into this crash is still ongoing.
