HR669
Crashes > of the R.A.F.
During the approach to the Cologne bombing target, the Halifax HR669 was fired on by several anti-aircraft batteries. A projectile hit the open bomb bay and a huge explosion shredded the aircraft in mid-air. The wreckage and the crew fell to the ground in a wider radius between Hürth-Kalscheuren and Knapsack.
None of the crew survived the explosion and their mutilated remains were buried in Cologne's Südfriedhof cemetery.
