Crashes > of the R.A.F.

During the heaviest attack on Cologne on the night of 28-29 June 1943, more than 4,300 people lost their lives in the cathedral city. More than 10,000 were injured and over 230,00 Cologne residents were left homeless that night.

One of the 608 British bombers en route to Cologne is Wellington X, HE443. On its approach to Cologne, it gets into a dogfight with the DO 217 of Hpt. Hans Baer of the 4th / NJG 3. He hits the Wellington so hard that it almost certainly explodes in the air and crashes between Inden and Lucherberg.

None of the crew were recovered; there are only memorial plaques for them at Rheinberg War Cemetery.
