During the attack on Remscheid, the Stirling III, EH896 came under the fire of several heavy anti-aircraft batteries. The aircraft caught fire, whereupon the entire crew abandoned it and rescued themselves by parachute. All were taken prisoner of war by the Germans.
The pilotless aircraft crashed near Forsten, a small village between Remscheid and Hückeswagen.
