The Lancaster ED689 is shot at on approach by the 1./schw. Flak.Abt. 135, 4,/schw. Flak. Abt.465, and other flak divisions over Rodenkirchen. It caught fire and crashed into the Rhine at 01:22 near Köln-Poll next to the Rodenkirchen motorway bridge. Two crew members are recovered dead from the wreckage and buried in Cologne's South Cemetery.
The remaining crew are also recovered, but are buried as "unknown British airmen" with other British soldiers who died that night in the Cologne South Cemetery. They were not identified until they were exhumed and transferred to Rheinberg Cemetery in July 1948.
