EB242

Crashes > of the R.A.F.

On approach to Remscheid, the Halifax EB242 came under heavy flak from the 1st / schwere Flak Abteilung 803. It circled the village of Delhoven and began to burn in the air. The pilot instructed the crew to bail out and he himself attempted an emergency landing. On the glide in a northerly direction, engines and other aircraft parts detached on fire. The aircraft struck a field 300 m southwest of Blechhof, which was still on Cologne territory at the time. It burnt out completely, the body of Fl/Sgt Bruce Wilfred Westerberg could only be recovered dead from the wreckage.
He was buried in the Cologne South Cemetery, and in July 1948 his remains were transferred to Rheinberg Cemetery.
The rest of the crew managed to escape by parachute and became German prisoners of war.
