Crashes > of the R.A.F.

During the attack on Essen, the Halifax II, DG224 was taken in the light beam by flak guns of the 3rd / Res. Flak Light Dept. 159 and pursued, whereupon the highly visible target was taken under fire by two flak units.
The aircraft crashed hit and on fire near Sinnerdorf and burnt out completely.
Seven crew members, including five RCAF Canadians perished in the flames and were buried in Cologne South Cemetery.

Only Sgt. Derek Robert Riches survived the crash and became a German prisoner of war.
