During the bombing raid on Essen, the Hampden I, AE291 is taken under fire by flak and catches fire. In the watch book of the air raid warning centre of the Monheim office, it is noted that she crashes near Hitdorf. There is no information on civilian casualties or damage to buildings, nor is the exact location of the crash known.
The four-man crew died in the crash and were buried in Cologne's South Cemetery.
