Crashes > of the R.A.F.

During a bombing raid on Düsseldorf, the Hampden AD916 was hit by heavy flak and caught fire.

The aircraft flew in the direction of Mönchen Gladbach, made a U-turn near Geilenkirchen and crashed between Süggerath and Müllendorf.
Three crew members were able to parachute out and landed in Gereonsweiler, Palenberg and Müllendorf. They were taken prisoner of war by the Germans*.

The pilot, Pilot Officer Irving Desmond, died in the crash and was buried in Cologne's South Cemetery.
