The P-51 with pilot 2nd Lt Frank Robinson was on a weather reconnaissance flight towards Grevenbroich. He must have lost his orientation in dense fog. The lead aircraft lost sight of him in dense cloud cover. Although he confirmed a change of course, which was communicated to 2nd Lt Robinson by radio, he did not respond to further calls.
The aircraft hit the tarmac at Cologne-Ostheim airport at around 08:15, Robinson could only be recovered dead.
