During the attack on Cologne and after the bombs were dropped, the bomber group was fired upon by flak. In the process, B-17 43-38108 was hit and got out of the flight formation. In the process it collided with B-17 43-38066, into whose propeller jet it had been caught. The propellers of the #108 cut through the radio compartment of the #066, which broke in two and crashed in Cologne-Flittard on the banks of the Rhine.
Only the radio operator survived the crash and became a German prisoner of war. The rest of the crew was only recovered dead and buried, partly as "unknown soldiers", in Cologne's West Cemetery.
The 43-38108 also crashed in Cologne-Niehl near the goods station.
