Crashes > of the USAAF
On the way back from the bombing raid on the railway and railway station facilities in Frankfurt, the B-17 F came within the range of several anti-aircraft divisions. It was hit and lost altitude very quickly. At Weilerswist, the aircraft changed direction to the east, crossed the Rhine at Niederkassel and finally crashed without crew in a meadow at the edge of the forest near Winterscheid. Here the aircraft splintered between the fuselage and tail section, the wings with the engines fell to the ground at the edge of the forest and burnt out. The wreckage was collected a few days later by a Luftwaffe recovery team and transported away.
The entire crew was able to parachute to safety early on and became German prisoners of war in the Bröhl valley between Kammerich and Lohmar.
